LANDRAKE MASTERS RACE REPORT (from 3rd and 4th July)
By mike.wood • Jul 6th, 2010 • Category: Welcome NoteWith just two rounds remaining,PAR Honda rider Scott Elderfield could well be the major recipient of the super Wulfsport British Masters prize fund on offer as he now tops both the Pro MX1 and MX2 classes following the latest exciting action at Landrake Moto Parc.Previously holding 2nd spot in the MX1 class,Scott recorded a 3rd /4th placing to now move 69 points clear at the top,in the process overhauling his closest rival Gordon Crockard who was a surprise non-starter.In MX2, Scott was already the leader but with both James Dodd and Martin Barr suffering injury at Landrake, the PAR Honda pilot now has a massive 172 points advantage.Pro class overall victories on Sunday went to Buildbase CCM rider Stephen Sword and Maxxis Henderson L.P.E Kawasaki’s Kristian Whatley in the respective MX1 and MX2 .Also having a great weekend was Moto-Pro Suspension BW85cc rider Adam Sterry who went through the card unbeaten.
Following a bright, sunny opening day contested on a dust free, professionally prepared circuit, riders on Sunday were then greeted by overcast conditions which quickly turned to steady drizzle, thus making track conditions slippery in places and visibility extremely difficult.!!.Undeterred, the Pro MX2 boys though served up a classic moto one.Kristian Whatley quickly took control but was soon under intense pressure from the PAR team of Brad Anderson,Scott Elderfield and Martin Barr with Alan Keet, making his 2010 Masters debut,Shane Careless and Matthew Moffat in hot pursuit.Eventually after five hot laps,Anderson found a way through but Whatley then superbly held off Elderfield and Barr for the remainder of the contest for a hard earned 2nd.Unfortunately in the closing stages,Barr was struck on the shoulder by a large stone, forcing him out for the remainder of the meeting.
There was drama on lap one of moto two as James Dodd suffered a heavy crash, requiring medical attention.Upfront, Anderson had made a stunning start to lead the way whilst Whatley slipped off dropping back to 5th behind Keet,Josh Spinks and Elderfield.Well in control and building a massive advantage at the front,Anderson’s hopes of another victory were then dashed as his Honda engine seized on lap six.Moving through it was Elderfield who now looked the likely winner although Whatley had recovered from his earlier spill to move menacingly up into 2nd with Careless again charging hard in 3rd.In a frantic conclusion,Whatley then dived inside Elderfield to earn the win whilst AMCA riders Jack Taylor and Lee Dunham both finished inside the top ten in respective 6th and 9th positions.
With drizzle now falling heavily, most of the riders in the opening Wulfsport Pro MX1 contest bravely threw away their goggles as they chased the big cash prizes on offer. It was Stephen Sword who led the opening five laps ahead of Ben LaMay,Anderson,Elderfield and Stuart Edmonds. However Anderson was in a very determined mood at Landrake, taking control for the win some six seconds ahead of Sword with Elderfield 3rd.After gating in 10th,Whatley moved up to pass LaMay for 4th.
Swordy grabbed the Pro MX1 moto two holeshot, but it was that man Anderson who took control by the completion of the opening lap.Swordy though stayed in close company before stylishly swooping back into the lead on lap four and from here onwards he dictated proceedings to earn the win.Holding 3rd spot from gate to flag was LaMay with Elderfield 4th,Edmonds 5th,Whatley 6th and Ryan Blizzard 7th.After being in 18th spot on lap one,John May made a great recovery in this moto to get home in 8th.
In the super race to win the lease of a brand new 2011 250F and clothing,Dan Thornhill continues to lead the Proppa.com MXY2 contest. However he is now coming under pressure from his Suzuki GB Youth team mate James Dunn who has slotted into 2nd spot in the title chase. At Landrake,Thornhill was on the podium with another very consistent performance and 3/3/2/7 scorecard, enough for 3rd overall behind winner Dunn and runner-up Luke Norris.Throughout the weekend,Dunn blasted his two-stroke Suzuki to three out of four moto wins, with Glenn Fletcher taking the opening victory of the Landrake Masters action.Indeed but for a heavy downhill crash in moto three,Glenn would have amassed enough points to invade the podium party.
As already mentioned,Moto-Pro Suspension BW85cc rider Adam Sterry was the only unbeaten rider of the weekend. With a superb performance,Sterry bagged maximum Masters points to overhaul both Thomas Davies and Adam Darbyshire and thus move up into 3rd in the title standings.Landrake also proved to be very productive for series leader Sam Winterburn. Not only did he take 2nd overall on the weekend, but he has also increased his Masters lead to 80 points with Darbyshire a non-starter and Murray Clunie suffering a moto one DNF.Having his best score so far in this Masters class was Curtis Blamey who took 3rd overall.Over in Moto-Pro Suspension SW85cc,leader Casey Connelly failed to top the podium for the first time in this current Masters series. With a no-score in moto three, young Casey was restricted to 9th overall.Victory on Landrake weekend went to David Keet, having his first Masters outing of 2010 ahead of Jay Hague and Tyron Cleaver.Cleaver’s podium spot means that he has reduced Connelly’s advantage to just 4 points,so it’s battle on at Hawkstone and Pontrilas!!.
At long last the dominance of Zac Stealey and Tom Watts in the Kawasaki Masters class as been broken. In a very dramatic Landrake opener, incredibly both Watts and 3rd placed Daniel Hill suffered blown engines.Taking maximum advantage of his rivals misfortune and earning yet another moto win was of course that man Stealey. However undettered,Watts displayed great character to then bounce back in style with three hard earned race victories of his own.Due to that moto one incident,it meant that Edward Briscoe and Dave Anthony deservedly shared the Landrake podium with Stealey whilst Bradley Lofthouse and Patrick Collins also finished ahead of Watts in the overall standings. So it’s advantage Stealey with eight races still remaining in a quality chase to win the lease of a super, green, shiny 2011 Kawasaki 250F.
It’s all change at the top of the Michelin Masters MX1,as Aaron Lowe has turned a 21 point deficit into a massive 167 point advantage over Shaun Scrivens. With Scrivens a non-starter at Landrake,Lowe set the fastest qualification time before also winning two moto’s,the other victories going to Jamie Wilson and Darren Fowden. In Michelin MX2, Marc Roe now holds a massive 225 point lead at the top of the table and with just eight moto’s remaining has handed himself a superb opportunity to claim his first Masters crown. At Landrake,Roe won the first three races before Tom Davies took the final moto victory, enough for 2nd overall ahead of Nathan Buckland. In the Championship standings,Tom Drabble has now moved up into 2nd ahead of early series pacesetter Scott Smith.
With nearest rival George Walton only scoring points in the opening race of the weekend,Matthew Williamson took full advantage to open up a 183 point advantage at the top of the Amateur MX1 class.Williamson had to settle for 3rd overall on the Landrake podium though as Hayden Wilkinson and Michael Reynolds took the top two slots. Wilkinson(2), Reynolds and a delighted George Purchase picked up the moto wins in this group. In GSP Race Products Amateur MX2,Darren Carter and Daniel Brough continue to dominate. In the opening three races at Landrake, they filled the top two positions with Brough twice the victor. However in the final clash of the weekend,Tom Neesam was first past the post followed by Bradley Wakefield with Brough in 3rd,Daniel Chapman 4th and Carter 5th.The Landrake results also produced a change in the Championship standings as both Richard McDermott and Aled Bellis overhauled 3rd placed Ricky Lethaby.
