On arrival at Pontrilas, the venue for round 5 of the 2012 AMCA Wulfsport British Masters,Ken Winstanley reported that the track and surrounding area was remarkably dry. However typical of the Masters misfortune in 2012,heavy rain then fell on Friday turning the paddock into an absolute quagmire and resulting in the need to tow every single vehicle onto the site in preparation for the event!!.

Thankfully though from here onwards the weather was then predominantly dry and the track in prime condition to thus enable an exciting full programme of super action.Ken and all of the Masters team deserve a massive pat on the back for their sterling efforts in once again getting it on!!.

After missing the previous round at Hawkstone Park,Pro stars Kristian Whatley and Neville Bradshaw were back in AMCA Wulfsport British Masters action last weekend,in the process bagging the respective overall wins in the Battery Energy Drink supported MX1 and MX2 classes.Again in scintillating form,PAR Honda rider Whatley blasted to both race victories and thus take home the big money on offer,a result which also saw him move back to the top of the MX1 Championship table with just one round remaining.Meanwhile Bradshaw in topping the MX2 class as now moved to just 6 points behind series leader Matt Burrows. Also starring at Pontrilas in a great weekend of Masters action were Matthew Moffat(Putoline 2-Stroke MX1),Dan Thornhill(GSP Race Products MXY2),Adam Wells(Michelin MX2) and Gradie Featherstone(Moto-Pro Suspension BW85cc) who all blasted to super maximum points scores.

Back to the Battery Energy Drink Pro racing though,as the main protagonists Whatley and Bradshaw were joined by a high quality, totally full line-up,including some of the Country’s most hungriest racers. When the gate dropped for moto one,it was Alex Snow who led the charge with Whatley,Josh Spinks,Josh Waterman,Alan Keet and Youth star Dan Thornhill chasing hard. Two laps in and Whatley surged to the front and there he stayed despite a determined late challenge from Snow with Waterman getting home in 3rd.But,whilst the top three maintained their positions, there was still plenty of high octane, frantic action going on just a little further downfield. As Spinks,Ray Rowson, Nicholas Aubin,Ashley Wilde and Scott Elderfield all disappeared from proceedings,Thornhill was having the ride of his career so far, moving up into 4th and for five laps brilliantly resisting the pressure of the rapid Evotech Stevens Honda pilot Bradshaw.Eventually Neville and Matt Moffat overhauled Dan,but what a performance!!.Also very impressive in moto one was Gert Krestinov, starting in 20th and moving up in style to earn 9th just behind Nathan Watson and Dorren Coutts.

Moto two and Snow pulled out another superb holeshot with Whatley,Bradshaw,Spinks,Coutts and Lewis King in tow. With King then disappearing two laps in,James Cottrell moved up the leaderboard.Upfront Snow held onto the race leadership for five exciting laps before once again the smooth Whatley soared to the front whilst as the race then developed,Coutts also got the better of Bradshaw for 3rd.Although from here onwards the top four broke away, the next six places were undecided right through to the finishing post.Continuosly battle raged with Rowson after initially gating in 12th eventually seeing off the likes of Nathan Watson,Wilde,Waterman,Spinks,Jack Brunell and Jordan Booker in a superb tussle which had the crowd cheering with delight.

In the Putoline Two-Stroke class,Matt Moffat ripped to four great moto wins, chased home on each occasion by the equally impressive James Lassu.Throughout the weekend,Joe Jones,Matthew Williamson,Sean Eckersley and Daniel Brough were also right in the mix.Taking the overall wins were Moffat(MX1) and Cory Joe Nemeth(MX2).In the title standings,Brough still tops MX1 whilst Alex Davies is the new MX2 leader as previous pace setter Sam Winterburn was away racing in Europe.

No doubt who bossed the GSP Race Products MXY2 class at Pontrilas as Grittenham MX Suzuki pilot Dan Thornhill took all four moto wins in style.Dan though missed round four of the Masters series when away on RBPN duty so is unlikely to bag his third consecutive title in this particular series.Currently leading the way is Jay Thomas with Scott Alldridge in 2nd.In the latest action, both Jay and Scott were right in the thick of the action, figuring prominently in the final results, with Jay the runner-up and Scott 4th behind Daniel Maxey whilst there was also impressive performances from Dima Fircks,Curtis Blamey and Tony Saunders.

Going into the Pontrilas event,Tyron Cleaver held a slender 6 point advantage at the top of the Moto-Pro Suspension BW85cc table. However on completion of the racing,Tyron is now 54 points behind rival Oliver Benton following a disastrous last moto mechanical problem. At Pontrilas,it was Gradie Featherstone and David Keet, both making their first appearances of 2012 who dominated proceedings. In all four moto’s,Gradie led the way chased by David whilst Mr Benton took 3rd overall ahead of Charlie Putman,Danny Mell and Josh Bunter.

The weekend did not also go quite to plan for Moto-Pro Suspension SW85cc leader Henry Siddiqui as he was forced out of moto one after just three laps. However young Henry then quickly composed himself to reel off three moto wins in the remaining clashes and thus maintain his march to the title.Taking the Pontrilas overall verdict was another Masters first timer Harry Wichman ahead of Matt Brame,Nathan Harlow and Howard Wainwright.

In the Scott Acerbis Amateur MX1 class,Darryl Maxwell(2),Shaun Pearce and Lewis Belfield all bagged Pontrilas moto wins.Pearce also took the overall victory from Maxwell and Scott Bates, but its Maxwell who crucially leads the title chase with a 53 point advantage over Matthew Thomas.

Typical of the close racing it always produces,Zook Clothing Amateur MX2 resulted in a race victory each for Ryan Crowder,Jack Cox,Edward Briscoe and Charles Statt. With Cox also crashing heavily when leading the opening moto on Sunday, the overall verdict was to go to the very consistent Crowder ahead of Cox,Briscoe,Ryan Williams and Statt.

Already this season, first Jake Alsop then Samuel Kirby have led the Michelin Masters MX1 Championship table but now with just one round remaining its William Orritt the pace setter. In the opening two races of the Pontrilas action, William also blasted to victory finishing ahead of his closest rival Kirby. However come Sunday and both lads were to be defeated by the very determined Tye Barrs who controlled from the front and earn his own moto win double in style. So with just Foxhills to come, Orritt has a 16 point advantage over Kirby, watch out for a Wiltshire thriller!!.

In Michelin MX2,Adam Wells further increased his title chasing advantage with a brilliant display of motocross racing.Wells was first past the post in all four clashes with his closest Championship rival Emerson Jones the runner-up.Also having a good weekend and earning the final podium place was Adam Constable whilst Jamie McCarthy, Adam Wigger and Ryan Osborn completed the top six.

It’s certainly early advantage Kristian Whatley and Neville Bradshaw in the race for the respective 2012 Pro MX1 and MX2 class titles following an all-action round two of the super AMCA Wulfsport British Masters at Foxhills on Easter weekend.

One again Whatley blasted his PAR Honda to both MX1 wins, picking up another cool £1,000 cheque whilst Bradshaw on his Evotech Stevens Honda just edged out the flying local Swindon lad James Dunn to take MX2 honours. Also hitting the headlines at the former GP circuit were both Matt Moffat(Putoline Two-stroke) and Jake Alsop(Michelin Masters MX1) as they blasted to impressive, unbeaten class wins.

With a large crowd looking on,there was to be early drama in the opening Battery Energy Drink supported Pro contest as one of the expected favourites,Stephen Sword was forced out on lap one with a puncture.Although Swordy did rejoin the contest following a quick wheel change, his race was over as the immaculate Whatley stormed to victory. The ride of the moto though belonged to young Dunn, hanging onto a brilliant 2nd spot aboard his HM Plant KTM ahead of Bradshaw,Moffat,Scott Elderfield and Graeme Irwin.

Desperate to make amends,Swordy was very quick out of the trap in moto two, leading the opening couple of laps before that man Whatley again took control. On lap seven,Bradshaw then also overhauled Sword and that’s the way it remained right to the flag. With another super charge,Dunn moved from 9th up to 4th and was even rapidly reeling in Swordy as Josh Waterman,Irwin,Luke Hawkins,James Cotteral,Elderfield and Moffat held down top ten positions and were always in contention.Clinton Barrs,Sean Frayne and Paul Neale all represented the AMCA in the Foxhills Pro racing with Barrs 10thoverall in MX1 whilst over in MX2,Frayne was 13th and Neale 14th,all three lads giving a very good account of themselves.

With a bumper entry, some new sponsors on board and changes to the race format,it was time for the very popular AMCA Wulfsport British Masters to open its 2012 series at Mallory Park,Leicestershire last weekend.

And,what a contrast in racing conditions the two day’s of round one were to produce!!.Following a dry Saturday in which the going was ideal, the weather then turned decidedly Wintry as the temperature dropped and rain/sleet fell both overnight and almost continuously during Sunday to leave the circuit extremely heavy but still remarkably raceable!!.Indeed that dramatic change was to prove a major examination of both a riders physical and mental strength with most having their first competitive action of the new season. However typical of the great AMCA Masters spirit that prevails, the riders, officials, marshalls and medical crews then just dug deeper and remained totally united in helping to ensure that the round one programme was completed!!.

With backing from Battery Energy Drink, for the first time at a Masters event,Pro MX1 and Pro MX2 rubbed shoulders in the same unlimited motos.Leading the muddy charge in moto one was Welshman Ashley Greedy followed by Kristian Whatley,James Cottrell,Scott Elderfield,Matt Burrows,Bryan MacKenzie and Darren Coutts whilst other expected front runners,Gert Krestinov and Neville Bradshaw surprisingly found themselves down in 12th and 19th places respectively!!.For the next two laps,Cottrell then splashed his way to the front to replace Greedy before Whatley then quickly became the third different pacesetter. From here onwards, the PAR Honda rider Whatley controlled proceedings all the way to the chequered flag with Cottrell and Coutts in tow.During an incident packed encounter,Bradshaw got back to a superb 4th ahead of Burrows and Krestinov,Greedy dropped to 7th,Elderfield disappeared from proceedings and MacKenzie the 2011 Masters Champion slipped back to 27th before eventually finishing 19th!!.

Buoyed by that moto one win,Whatley made a great start in moto two, bagging the holeshot and leading the opening five laps. However right on his tail this time was a very determined MacKenzie, desperate to make amends for that lowly opening race finishing position. On lap six,Bryan cleverly out-foxed Kristian to take control as Bradshaw now joined the party for the race leadership. In a great three way tussle, the pressure was on to win that £500 prize for the first rider past the post and once again the money was going to Whatley’s back pocket with Bradshaw nicking 2nd from MacKenzie.Just behind the flying front three was an equally intriguing tussle featuring Krestinov,Greedy and Cottrell which raged right to the finish line, the honours going to Krestinov.Completing the top ten in this contest was Burrows,Matthew Moffat,Coutts and Ray Rowson whilst on both occasions,MX2 pilot Sean Frayne was to be the first AMCA rider home, bagging impressive 15th and 20th places .

Testing his endurance to the max,Matthew Moffat also competed in the new Putoline 2-Stroke Masters and eventually went onto earn the overall win..Taking the first victory though of the weekend was Wiltshire HM Plant KTM pilot James Dunn with James Lassu,Daniel Brough,Moffat,Sam Winterburn and Harry Lawerence in tow.In moto two,Moffat then outgunned Dunn before it was all change on that wet second day of action. With Dunn deciding to sit out proceedings and concentrate on his Pro class outings,Sunday’s 2-Stroke moto wins went to Brough and Moffat.Brough’s victory in the mud helped ensure that he would join Moffat on the podium, joined by runner-up Lassu.

Going for a MXY2 title treble,Gloucestershire youngster Dan Thornhill began his campaign in the best style possible by earning the GSP Race Products sponsored event overall verdict at Mallory. In moto one of the weekend though it was Jay Thomas the 2011 Championship runner-up who was first past the post with Thornhill a close 2nd as Matthew Callaghan,Chase Neale,Reece Desoer and Dima Fircks completed the top six.In moto’s two and three, the immaculate Thornhill took both the wins before an eventful final clash!.In moto four, twice Dan worked his way to the front only to crash!!.So,at the flag the victory belonged to Zac Alsop as Thornhill regained his composure to edge out Desoer for 2nd.Alsop’s last race win also ensured that he would join the podium party!!.

Whilst Whatley bagged both Pro class wins, the only other rider to remain unbeaten at Mallory was Jordan Moxey who blasted to a brilliant maximum score in the combined Moto-Pro Suspension Mini-Masters contest. Young Moxey made a mockery of the prevailing conditions throughout the weekend as Charlie Putnam and Oliver Benton proved to be his closest challengers and also earn the remaining BW85CC podium places. Tyron Cleaver,Eddie Remmer and Luke Craig also impressed in this opening round.Over in SW85cc,2011 Champion Henry Siddiqui started the defence of his title with a very impressive performance to finish level on points at the top of the standings with Howard Wainwright. However crucially, young Wainwright bagged the final moto win of the weekend,a result which also ensured that he would lift the first place trophy whilst Matt Brame completed the podium.

What about the Amateur classes then?,well in an incredible Scott Acerbis MX1 contest,Lewis King started with a lowly 24th spot in moto one but still went onto take the overall win.Following that opener in which victory was secured by Jamie Dobson ahead of Darryl Maxwell,Luke Meredith and Luke Spence,King was to recover in style. After taking 2nd spot behind Glenn Fletcher in moto two,King then splashed to both race wins on the Sunday.Joining a delighted King on the podium was Meredith and Ricky Lethaby, the 2011 Raceworld.com Amateur MX2 Champion. Now sponsored by Zook Clothing, who would take the first honours in the always competitive Amateur MX2 class?. Well it was to be Midlands based youngster Jack Cox,a rider who will also be attempting to qualify for the main AMCA MX2 British Championships in 2012.With an impressive 1/2/4/1 scorecard,Cox was the main man in this Zook opener as TM kid Charles Statt and Rocket Centre Honda pilot Ryan Crowder bagged the remaining moto wins.Showing though that consistency is always the motocross keyword, the runners-up slot on the box instead belonged to Edward Briscoe as Lancastrian Crowder had to settle for 3rd.

Once again Michelin have very kindly backed the Masters series, supporting both MX1 and MX2 Amateur classes in 2012.Shaun Scrivens were first past the post in the opening MX1 bash chased by William Orritt,Samuel Kirby,Sam Chapman and Jake Alsop. With Scrivens then having a no-score against his name in the next clash, from here onwards it was to be the Alsop show!.Dominating proceedings,Jake bagged a moto win hat-trick to deservedly claim the round one overall from Kirby and Orritt. As for Scrivens, well another no-score in the last moto pushed him back to 15th place in the final standings!!.Over in Michelin MX2,Emerson Jones and Adam Wells rather dominated the Mallory proceedings by filling the top two places in all four clashes.Jones(3) and Wells(1) bagged the wins, being finally joined on the podium by Tom Smith who was equally impressive and boasting a 4/3/5/3 record. Also starting their Michelin MX2 title quest with strong performances were Adam Constable,Aidan Wigger and James Milne.

For the lads missing out on the main Amateur classes at Mallory, they were able to enjoy four Non-Qualifiers races, the overall verdict going to Stephen Goodwin ahead of Paul Lloyd and Oliver Claxton. With the Mallory action wrapped up,the AMCA Wulfsport Masters now moves to Culham on Easter Weekend for what is sure to be a feast of highly competitive Pro,Youth and Amateur motocross racing!!.
